Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Eduardo Nunez

Here's the best man speech I delivered that evening.

Good evening,

My name is Marvin Alvarez.

I’ve been part of every chapter of Choy’s life. For me, it’s a rare but extremely lucky situation.

In fact, I went through three graduations with him. First, from Ateneo Grade School where he graduated with honors. Then, from Ateneo High School where he once again graduated with honors. And finally, from Ateneo de Manila where he graduated, to no one’s surprise, with honors. For a time, I even worked with him in Hewlett-Packard in the same project team!

Choy, now that you’re starting a new chapter in your life. This time, I think I’ll pass.

[ALTERNATIVE: Yes, Choy we practically have the same circle of friends from every chapter of our lives that I can just simply borrow your guest list when it’s my turn to get married.]

After more than a decade of being his classmate and a few years as his officemate, there have been only three constants in Choy’s life.

  1. He has always been shy and quiet.
  2. His impeccable taste for the latest fashion.
  3. His Spanish beauty

Let’s go over each item one-by-one.

#1 Choy has always been shy and quiet. He absolutely hates being the center of attention. The fact that I am talking about him right now is making him very uncomfortable. You simply need to just watch him at this moment and count the number of times he shifts in his seat. So far, I’ve counted 4 times.

#2 Choy’s impeccable taste for fashion. Choy is famous for the clothes he wears. There are some clothes that only Choy would dare wear. He’s the only one I know who can pull off wearing clothes with outlandish colors, flowery designs or ruffles. Take note, all his clothes are high-end brands. You’ll never find a Giordano, Bench, Dickies or Guess in his closet. All you’ll find are Burberry’s, Paul Smith’s, John Varvatos, Marc Jacobs, Ozwald Boateng’s and other brands that are still unknown to us. All you know need to know is this – “Hindi pa uso, meron na si Choy!”

#3 Choy’s Spanish beauty. Way back in high school when we first started discovering girls, Choy was and still is the worst person to be your wingman – mainly because hindi na ako napapansin ng mga girls. Choy has always been and always will be a hearth-throb to the ladies and to men.

Now I will focus my attention to deeper things that you may not know about Choy at face value.

Choy has been an achiever all his life from his academic excellence in grade school, high school and college to his professional life in Hewlett-Packard. Back in school, you are always guaranteed an A when Choy’s your groupmate. He’s very artistic and a perfectionist – never really being satisfied with pwede na. And yet, Choy remains as humble and grounded as ever. These character traits are a testament to his fast-track success in HP where, within 6 years, he is now a manager.

Hence, I have absolutely no doubts that Choy will be an excellent father and husband – because I know exactly how much Choy loves Jill.

In spite of all Choy’s professional success in HP and having his own bottled-drink distribution business in Novaliches, Choy is more than willing to give it all up to allow Jill to pursue her medical residency anywhere in the world – whether it’s in California or Sydney. Bravo!

Idol kita, Choy! Pangarap ko rin maging housband in the future!

Choy, God has so far intertwined our lives and our destinies that I wouldn’t be surprised if our futures would still be tied together in some form or another – even if you establish your new family in another country.

Jill, your sister’s a doctor too right? Choy, we can be housebands together!

For those of you who didn’t know. This was actually a wedding of two brides because of the many disagreements the bride and groom had over small wedding details. Choy, this is the only advice I’ll give you for a happy and trouble-free marriage. When Jill is asking you a question, she is NOT asking for your opinion. She simply wants your affirmation. So if it’s a choice between the black bag or the brown bag. Choy, it’s not the fuchsia, flowery bag with ruffles that you’re holding. Jill already made up her mind. It’s the black bag – just affirm her choice!

I’d like to invite everyone to take their glasses and join me in a toast.

Choy, take Jill's hand and place it over your heart. Now, remember this moment and cherish it... because this will be the last time you'll ever have the upper hand!

To the houseband and wife! Cheers!

Ann's Milestone and her Involvement in a Crime Scene

Ann finally hit the 10,000km milestone about a week before its scheduled quarterly Toyota maintenance.

It was a very memorably milestone because a thief smashed my right rear passenger window and stole my laptop. It happened between 4:50 PM and 5:20 PM while Ann was parked in an empty lot beside Ala Crème in San Fernando, Pampanga. The stolen item was a 4-5 year old IBM Thinkpad X40. It hardly has any market value anymore - but I lost all my pictures and files. That is what hurts the most.
I was the third victim that day. The second victim was a San Miguel employee who was attending a seminar at Gracelane. His bag mostly contained business documents and had little value to the thieves. Hence, it was stashed underneath my car – right behind my front right tire. At around 6:30 PM in the San Fernando police station, the 2nd victim arrived in his Toyota Revo to claim his bag. His Toyota Revo had the same window smashed in his car. The 2nd victim was so happy and relieved to get his belongings even though a few items were missing.
I couldn’t help but narrate to him the trauma that his bag experienced underneath my car. Earlier, none of us wanted to touch his bag for fear that it may be a bomb. Hence, the police had to call in their bomb disposal unit.

There methods were crude but effective. They simply tied one end of a plastic rope on the bag. Then, they pulled the bag away from my car at a safe distance – at least 30 meters away. It was a funny experience too because he was pulling the bag in our direction where it could explode near us. Hahaha!
